Mahjongify - Non mahjong game with mahjong tiles

Prologue

I love mahjong, and for nearly two years I have consistently played the Riichi variant with my friends every single week. At home, my family also enjoys playing a wide variety of card games using a standard French deck. It can be Minuman, Rummy, Big Two, and Fight the Landlord, just to name a few.

I have always wondered why there are so many different games for the French deck, while mahjong is almost always limited to Solitaire or traditional mahjong variants. I wanted to play more games using these beautiful tiles, and it turns out I am not alone. There are discussions across the internet, such as this thread on BoardGameGeek.

This project is my attempt to adapt popular card games using mahjong, adding twists (where possible) that make use of mahjong’s unique properties or give the games a more mahjong-like identity. I apologize if you came to this project expecting 1:1 adaptations of the original card games, but I still hope it inspires you to play these games in your own way using your own beautiful mahjong tiles!

Status

These are games with rulesets that I am more or less satisfied with and probably won’t change too much.

Game Rules PoC Game Note
Texas Hold’em Poker Yes Yes Set 48. Custom hand ranking.
Big 2 Yes Yes Set 48. Custom hand ranking.
“What the Heck?” Yes Yes Set “What the Heck?”.

Can I play the game?

If you see “Yes” under “PoC Game”, then yes! I implemented some of the games as web browser games so I (and you) can quickly get a feel for them. Any implementation of these games will be live on the site Mahjongify.

Please keep in mind the roughness and AI simplicity, as the project is focused on rapid prototyping rather than an actual polished game implementation.

Epilogue

This post is also a living document that will update whenever there are any new rulesets or proof-of-concept games.

Thanks for reading! Hope you try my rulesets!
